Mahogany Bay Beach, Roatan, Honduras

Mahogany Bay Cruise Port (Roatan, Honduras)

Roatan is an island off the north coast of mainland Honduras. Roatan is Honduras’ main cruise ship travel destination. Also, Roatan is an important eco-tourism destination in Honduras, the lush vegetation speaks for itself. There are two cruise ship ports on the island. These are Mahogany Bay Cruise Ship Port and Coxen Hole Cruise Ship Port. By the way Coxen Hole is the capital of Roatan and the largest town on the island.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Ship Port

The Mahogany Bay Cruise Ship Port is the only one I have actually visited. Firstly, the terminal has a nice layout with many options for food, drinks, gifts and souvenirs. Secondly, there is a chair lift feature. The chair lift offers the lift service to passengers at a cost of USD12. Because the ticket is for the entire day, though pricey, its understandable. This transports passengers to and from the terminal building and Mahogany Beach. Also, of worthy mention the plant life. Because of the lush greenery, this port is great for those Instagram worthy photo shoots.

Shopping

Once you disembark the ship, you venture on a short walk first to the Dufry duty-free shop. Once you exit the shop, just off the cruise ship pier, there you will find restaurants, several souvenirs shops, ATM, rent-a-car and more. Basically, within the port you have all you need for an exciting day off the ship. Also, if you are looking to leave the port, make a stop at the Roatan Island tours for the local excursions.

Mahogany Bay Beach

Mahogany Bay Beach hands down is one the most memorable ones I have visited. Generally, according to the locals, the area has year round tropical warm weather. The beach is located about an easy ten minutes’ walk from the shopping area (best route for wheel chair users). Likewise, you can walk through the nature trail to access the beach. The entrance to the nature trail is just outside the Dufry’s duty free store, as soon as you exit the pier. The terrain is uneven (as seen below). So is not suited for wheel chair users.

  • Lovely view while wlaking through the nature trail in the Mahogany Bay Cruise Port in Roatan, Honduras
  • Finished the nature trail and heading to the beach
  • Passing the crocodile statue on the grounds of the Mahogany Bay Beach
  • Chess Game set up at Mahogany Bay Beach
  • Looking at the Marella Discovery 2 from Mahogany Bay Beach

The beach was always very clean and I guess we have great timing, because its always so bright and sunny. In addition to cleanliness, the beach area has a welcoming feel to it, with beach waiters to tend to your drink and meal orders.

There is no charge to enter the beach area or use the lounge chairs. However, other conveniences like snorkel equipment, beach floats and clam shell-shaped shades are offered at a cost. In addition, you can find out more at the Beach Rental Hut located on the beach.

What currency is used in Mahogany Bay Cruise Port

As mentioned before, there is an ATM located in the port shopping area of the Mahogany Bay Cruise Port. US Dollars is very much welcomed on the island. Likewise, you can opt to use the local Honduran Lempiras.

Is it expensive to shop at Mahogany Bay Cruise Port and Beach?

Really, this depends on you and what you are willing to spend for your happiness. Personally, I do not shop a lot, but when I do, it is a treat for myself. Because of this, I am always happy to indulge. Generally, crew claim it is very expensive compared to the other ports. So, my advice, get your food on the ship then enjoy the site and Wi-fi (special crew offer).
