Kefalonia (Greece)

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands in Greece. The Ionian Islands include, Corfu (usually my ship’s home port), Paxi, Lefkada, Kefalonia, Ihtaca, Zakynthos and Kithira) in Greece. The cruise ship docks at the Argostoli Cruise Pier. Argostoli is the largest town and the capital of Kefalonia.

Once you disembark the ship, you walk toward the main road, where you will see the Merchant Marine Academy. Turn left to access: Central Square, Shopping Centre, the Museums and the Banks. To the right, you can walk to the beach and a small forest.

One of the first things I did upon visiting Kefalonia was to find the trolley train. I find that the trolley train is an easy and quick way to see most of the city. With the train, you get a general idea of what to expect and where to walk. Afterwards you are better able to navigate the city on your own. I believe the price at the time was 5 euros.

Take a leisurely walk to the central square of Argostoli. The surrounding areas have many varieties of souvenirs, gift items and of course, traditional and locally made Greek memorabilia.

Your day in Argostoli can include several things to do. Because I really enjoy walking and taking in nature, one thing I like to do is walk through the Kefalonia Botanical Garden.

To be even more adventurous, take a taxi to the Lassi area where you can enjoy a bit of the Ioanian Sea.

Enjoy a visit at the clock tower, where you will have a great view of the entire city.

Visit Saint Spiridon Church located on the main shopping street in Argostoli. Additionally, you may also want to visit the Catholic Church of St Nicholas. It is a lovely little church located basically in the middle of the town.

My visits to new countries are never complete without visiting one of several museums. One such museum in Argostoli is the Archaeological Museum, located opposite the Kefalos municipal theater. Also, opposite the Archaeological Museum is the Historical and Folklore Museum.

Weather in Kefalonia

I have only ever visited Kefalonia during the summertime. They do not get that much rain and the temperature is usually somewhere between 22 to about 34 degrees. But generally, it was very windy. So to me, the weather had a perfect mix.

Currency

The currency used in Kefalonia is the Euro (€). Because Greece is a member country of the European Union.
